The Wursten Cup golf tournament was held last month bringing two large teams of local golfers together for a fun contest at the Falcon Ridge Golf Course.
This tournament is played in honor of two local brothers who are important on the Mesquite golf scene: Brian and Rob Wursten. Brian is the Director of Golf for Mesquite Gaming while Rob is the General Manager at Falcon Ridge.
“That is unique!” said Jim Buttler who helps organize the Wursten Cup tournament. “To have two brothers in a small town like Mesquite, operating two major golf courses; that is unique in the United States and maybe even in the world.”
“The Wurstens have taken good care of us in the realm of Mesquite golfing for many years,” Buttler added. “So we put on this fun tournament to honor them.”
The tournament brings together 40 golfers, two teams of 20. The Falcon Ridge team is led by Buttler. The Casablanca team is led by Steve Kerrick, golf pro at Casablanca. The two teams meet twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. They alternate courses each time.
“It is just for fun,” Buttler said. “There is no money involved. It is way more important than that. It’s for bragging rights.”
This season’s winner of the Wursten Cup trophy was the Falcon Ridge team. But it was close. Out of 1600 strokes in the tournament the difference between the two teams came down to only 27 strokes.
“It was a good day of golf,” Buttler said. “We golf. We post the scores. We have a party afterwards and we look at who won. It is just a fun time.”
