The Progress
The Virgin Valley High School Boys Basketball program saw 29 basketball hopefuls turn out for preseason practice earlier this month. But despite having plenty of players to distribute to varsity, J.V. and freshman squads, the lack of experience may be a challenge to the program early in the season.
The Dawgs return only one starter, Stratton Waite, from last year’s 16-9 team.
Joining Waite will be occasional starter center Braden Harris as well as seniors Matt Hughes and Wyatt Leavitt.
Junior newcomers Brekk Banister, Cameron Wright, Cameron Spilker and Drake Wakefield will be coming abord as well as sophomores Reece Leavitt and Rodrigo Lopez.
Augmenting the squad will be speedy freshman Elian Pinto and Malachi Davis.
The Dawgs will open the season on Tuesday, Nov. 29 by hosting Kanab (Utah) High School. They will then host their annual Bulldog Invitational Tournament (BIT) this weekend on December 2-3.
Competitors in the tournament will be Lincoln County, Cristo Rey, White Pine and Moapa Valley.
The Dawgs open the tournament against Lincoln on Saturday Dec. 2 at 4:30 pm.
This tournament should give Coach Wakefield and fans an idea of how far the Dawgs will go this year.
The Bulldogs open 3A play on Monday Dec. 5 against last year’s Desert League Champions Boulder City at 6:30 pm.
