The Virgin Valley High School Girls Basketball program greeted 26 prospects for basketball tryouts this season. And there was high quality and a depth of experience in those numbers.

“I can comfortably say that there is not one player on my 13 player roster, whom I don’t trust to perform at a high level,” said Head Coach Cliff Hughes. “Our depth is the best in years. We have had competition for all positions so far.”

Hughes said that the girls played a lot of basketball during the summer to prepare for the season. This effort really shows on the court. he said.
“Our energy is different this year which has led to some aggressive practices,” Hughes added.

The Bulldogs went 11-3 in league play last season and had a 16-8 record overall.
The Dawgs return eight players from that squad. These veterans will be joined by five promising freshman to make up the team.

Seniors Riley Price and Brooklin Montoya, who were last year’s leading scorers, are returning. Also coming back are starters Natalie Isidro, Evia Toone and Ana Tausinga, Reggie Frei, Alexia Desantiago and Audry Fiso.

Joining the group this year will be freshman players Julia Leavitt, Ashley Anguiano, Anna Sedano, Linita Kioa and Hayden Owlsey who are the future stars of the Bulldogs.
“The Southern Division will be tough again this year,” said Hughes.

Moapa Valley (14-0; 25-3), Pahrump Valley (13-1; 26-3) will return strong teams along with SLAM Academy, Somerset-Losee and Boulder City.
“All of that makes for a competitive division!” Hughes said.

The Lady Dogs opened the season hosting Bonanza on Monday November 28 before participating in the 2A/3A Challenge Tournament this weekend, December 2-3 at Moapa Valley High School. Their first 3A test will be on December 5 against the Eagles from Boulder City in the Dawg House.
