Moapa Valley High School football coach Brent Lewis was named Tom Flores High School Coach of the Year in a surprise presentation given by the Las Vegas Raiders organization at Allegiant Stadium on Nov. 14, in front of the entire MVHS Varsity Football team.

The team and its coaches were a bit unsure why they were all being brought to Allegiant that evening. They surmised that they must have been invited to the stadium as part of a large event for high school football teams across the region. When they arrived they were astonished to find they were the only ones in attendance. In fact, the Pirates were the only ones to be invited.

“I was surprised to say the least,” said Lewis in an interview with The Progress. “The Raiders invited the team in to see Allegiant Stadium on the Monday after we lost to Truckee, which I thought was a little weird.”

The Raiders organization rolled out the red carpet for the Pirates. The team was escorted into the building and out onto the field where they met some true Raiders icons.

First the team heard some brief remarks from Raiders Youth Football Manager Jordan Aguilar. Then Raiders wide receiver Albert Wilson spoke to them. Finally, Raiders alumnus player Jim Plunkett came out onto the field to talk to the team.

Plunkett presented Lewis with the Tom Flores Coach of the Year award along with a check for $2,000.
Lewis had been selected for the award out of all high school coaches in southern Nevada, including all divisions.

“It was definitely one of the moments where, so soon after losing to Truckee, I didn’t feel deserving,” Lewis said. “But I was certainly humbled to be recognized by the Raiders for the great season we had.”

The team was then treated to dinner at the exclusive Capital One Club in the stadium, and a VIP tour of the facility including an inside look at the Raiders locker room.
“Winning this honor really just shows what great players and assistant coaches we have in our program,” Lewis concluded. “I couldn’t do my job without those guys.”
