After running the table to finish unbeaten at 18-0 and winning the 3A state championship last season, Virgin Valley is poised and ready to defend its title as the prep flag football season begins this week.

The Lady Bulldogs, who capped their perfect season by defeating Boulder City in the state title game, has lost several key members from a year ago. But, they also return several players that contributed to the team’s success.

“We have a chance to be good again this year,” VVHS head coach Joey Bowler said. “This may be the most depth we’ve had since I’ve been here.”

Bowler, who is entering his 10th year in charge of the Virgin Valley program, says there are 14 players who can play anywhere on the field – offense or defense.
“Our defense could be outstanding again this year and the offense will only get better each week,” Bowler said. “The opportunity is there to be a very good team.”

Virgin Valley, which has played in the past five state championship games, opened play hosting Clark of Las Vegas on Monday before traveling to Las Vegas to take on Centennial Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs will host a loaded field on Friday and Saturday in the annual Virgin Valley Invitational which will be held at the Mesquite Sports and Events Complex.

The 15-team field boasts 12 of the top 15 teams in the state of Nevada and includes all three defending state champions Shadow Ridge (5A), Liberty (4A) and Virgin Valley.
“I think it’s good for us to play these teams,” Bowler said. “It lets us know where we stack up against these bigger schools. It also gets us ready for league play.”

Bowler says the league will be tough sledding this year with Boulder City, Moapa Valley, SLAM Academy and Spring Valley expected to field strong teams.
“I know Boulder lost only one starter from last year and Moapa will be very good,” Bowler said.

Even though the Lady Bulldogs’ chances of going unbeaten again this season may be a challenge, the goal remains unchanged.
“The goal is to get to Allegiant Stadium to play for the state title,” Bowler said.
