The Hughes Middle School girls basketball team clinched their second consecutive league championship by defeating Lied STEM Academy, 54-35, on Wednesday, Feb. 15 in Mesquite.
The Lady Hawks, who defeated rival Mack Lyon, 46-18, two days earlier in Overton, ran the table to finish a perfect 12-0 to claim the Northwest Division II league title. HMS also went 12-0 in league play last year and then went on to capture the CCSD Division II championship.
Hughes will now advance to the CCSD postseason tournament, the middle school equivalent of a state tournament, this week.
The Lady Hawks, who are 18-1 overall on the season, will host Knudson Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. in a quarterfinal contest at the Hawks Nest. If HMS wins, they will host a semifinal game Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal between Lied and Johnston. HMS defeated Johnston, 49-23, in a non-league game on Friday at home.
The other side of the tournament bracket features two unbeaten teams in Gunderson and Mannion.
The CCSD championship game will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Green Valley High School in Henderson.
The Hughes boys team concluded their season at 5-7 in league play and 5-12 overall. The Hawks dropped three games last week falling to rival Mack Lyon, 32-30, Lied, 46-30, and Johnston, 52-38, to close out the season.
