Pirate Track and Field Competes at Centennial

The Moapa Valley High School Track and Field season came to a quick start last week. Only a week after the State Basketball tournaments, Pirate track and field athletes began their season at the newcomers meet at Centennial High School in Las Vegas on Friday, March 3.

Moapa Valley had 30 athletes attending the meet who were in their first year of the sport.
Then on Saturday was the first annual Bulldog Invitational, also at Centennial.

The top performers for the Pirates on Friday included Grant Conger who finished eighth in the 800 meters and sixth place in the 1600 meters. Gweneth Foster had a tenth place finish in the girls 1600 meters. Evelyn Ward took third place in the 100 meter hurdles. Taylee Bunch got a fourth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. Emme Bowler took seventh place in the 300 meter hurdles. Brody Redd got a fourth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles and second in the triple jump.

Dakota Bush took eighth place and Ellis Porter ninth in the 110 meter hurdles.
Diane Leavitt finished eighth in the shot put. Addison Sherwood tenth in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Jaxon Bunker was ninth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Tony Carillo was tenth in the boys shot put and second in the discus.
Gisella Rios finished ninth in the long jump Noah Rose finished fifth in the high jump while Caleb Anderson was third in the pole vault.

Saturday saw twelve Pirate athletes traveling to Las Vegas.

Mordechai Yadegar II had a strong performance with a first place finish in the 800 meter run. He also finished third in the 3200 meters.

Marcus Shambaugh took first in the 1600 meters for the Pirates with a time of 4:42.96. Yadegar finished second in the right behind Shambaugh at 4:42.96. Yadegar, by the way, is just a sophomore.
Junior Logan Stewart finished sixth in the discus with a personal record throw of 116-1. Stewart also took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43-1 another personal record. Damon Bevan finished sixth in the triple jump.
Leyah Cavajal finished fifth in the Discus with a throw of 91-2.

The Pirates will travel to Arbor View on Wednesday this week for a midweek meet. Then they will compete at the Ken Jensen Invitational at Virgin Valley.

The Moapa Valley boys team is the defending state champion and will be in the mix for the title this year as well.
