Bulldogs Take Loss to Hurricane, Beat Western

The Virgin Valley High School baseball team dropped a non-conference game, 6-4, against Hurricane High School out of Southern Utah on Wednesday, April 5. The team then went on to wallop Western High School, 18-2, on Saturday. Both games were played on the Bulldog field.

The Hurricane team stepped out early on Wednesday, putting up two runs on the board in the first inning.

The Bulldogs answered with two of their own in the frame on hits by Kurt Felix and Mason Montoya.
The Tigers then pulled ahead in the next two innings scoring a run in each of the second and third. Hurricane pitcher Casey Robinson pitched three-up-three-down innings to keep the Bulldogs from even getting on base in the two innings.

Dodger Smith broke out of the pattern in the fourth inning with a double on a line drive to right field. He was brought home on the next at-bat by Jared Jensen who hit a single third base and then advanced to second on the throw.

But the Tigers weren’t finished yet. A big triple, hit by Sam Johanson in the fifth inning brought two Hurricane runners home to bring the score to 6-3, Tigers.

Another Bulldog run was scored in the sixth inning by Smith off of a ground out hit by Aidan Litzenberger for the final score. But it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs to catch up with the Tigers in time.

Smith led the Bulldogs with two hits in the game. Felix, Montoya, Jensen and Litzenberger each got an RBI.

The Virgin Valley bats dominated the diamond on Saturday against the Western Warriors. The Bulldogs amassed no less than 14 hits in the game spread out among 7 batters. Five of them got multiple hits.

The Bulldogs put up five runs right out of the gate in the first inning. They scored another five in the second inning and four more in the third before the Warriors even got on the board.

Western was able to scratch up two runs in the top of the fourth inning. But the Bulldogs answered with four more of their own in the frame for the final score. The game was called on the mercy rule at that point.
Montoya got the onslaught started in the first inning with a ground ball single that brought in two

runners.
Montoya went 3-3 at home plate on Saturday, also driving in runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings for a total of 5 RBI.
Jared Jensen also hit 3 of 3 in the game, bringing home 4 runs.

Stratton Waite got two hits. Felix got two hits and 4 RBI while Chandon Jensen got a pair of hits as well with 2 RBI. Braden Harris got one hit and 1 RBI in the game.

Martin Jordan go the win for the Bulldogs, going the distance on the mound. He allowed five hits, 2 runs and struck out 7 Warrior batters in the four innings.

With Saturday’s steamroll victory, the Bulldogs are 10-7 overall, 2-0 in league play.
Virgin Valley will play Cheyenne on Tuesday, Apr. 11 at 3:30 pm on Bulldog field. Then on Thursday, they will play host again against Eldorado, also starting at 3:30.
