At the beginning of every Moapa Valley High School Boy’s Volleybal match, the American Flag gets unfurled and the crowd rises as the National Anthem is played.

But on Monday, Apr. 3, there was a technical difficulty with the music. It was then that Pirate fan Woody Woods stood up from the audience on the MVHS side and started belting out the words: “O Say Can You See.” Soon everyone in the high school gym was singing along with Mr. Woods. It was beautiful to see and hear.

After this impromptu patriotic display, the Moapa team had their hands full in a tough match against visiting Boulder City. It was a hard fought night playing the reigning state champions.
MVHS lost to BC in 3 sets, 13-25, 10-25 and 21-25.

“The first 2 sets against Boulder were rough,” said MVHS head coach Tiffany Frederick. “But the third set we settled down and played really well. It’s hard to go up against a team that has a lot of players that play club year round when a lot of our boys play other sports, not just volleyball. But we definitely played better against them this year opposed to last year.”

“I’m seeing huge improvements in a short time so I know if we keep progressing at this rate, we will see Boulder City again for state in 5 weeks!” Frederick added.

Later in the week, the Pirates faced the Eldorado Sundevils in a match held on Thursday, April 6. The Pirates came away with a win in four sets, 25-21, 25-19, 27-29, 25-22.
The Eldorado defense was strong.

“We had lots of errors in that 3rd set,” Frederick said. “So that cost us that one, but we came back strong and finished the game 3-1!”

Ben Kernebeck was on fire leading the team with 15 kills! Joe Whitmore picked up the most blocks for the night. And Trent Nelson led the team with the most digs.

Moapa Valley returns to the home court next Monday, April 17, against Sunrise Mountain.
