Baseball/Softball Roundup (April 26, 2023)

MVHS Baseball

The Moapa Valley High School baseball team beat Del Sol 20-3 at Del Sol last week. The Pirates then followed that up with a huge win at Cheyenne 22-6.
On Monday, April 17 against Del Sol game, Tyson Staheli and Tyson Pettingill each drove in 3 runs to lead the Pirates. Staheli hit a homerun.

Trenton Wadsworth was the winning pitcher with 5 strikeouts in the three inning game.
The Pirates scored 11 runs in the top of the third for the mercy rule ending.
Against Cheyenne, the Pirates went 4 innings against the Desert Shields scoring 14 runs in the top of the fourth for the win.
Staheli and Schouten each hit home runs with Landon Wrzesinski driving in three runs.

VVHS BASEBALL

The Virgin Valley High School Baseball team had three games on the road last week where they easily defeated teams at Sunrise Mountain, Canyon Springs and Sierra Vista.
On Tuesday, April 18, the Bulldogs travelled to Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas and beat the Miners 15-0. It only took three innings.
Kurt Felix, Mason Montoya and Martin Jordan each pitched an inning allowing no hits in the game. Jordan got the win.

The Bulldogs got 11 hits in the game led. Jordan, Drake Wakefield and Chandon Jensen each got two hits in the game. Jordan chalked up 5 RBI. Montoya drove four batters home in just one hit.
The Bulldogs were back on the road to Las Vegas on Wednesday to face Canyon Springs where they trashed the Pioneers 18-1.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bulldogs put six runs on the board in the second inning and twelve more in the third inning when the game was called on the mercy rule.
Braden Harris got the win for the Bulldogs pitching two innings allowing no hits and striking out 4.. Matthew Hughes came in for relief in the third inning, rounding out the no-hitter for the Bulldogs.Hughes struck out 2.

Virgin Valley got 14 hits in the game led by Stratton Waite and Felix who each got 3 hits. Waite got 4 RBI and Felix got 2.
The Bulldogs took one more trip into Vegas on Saturday to face Sierra Vista, beating the Mountain Lions 9-4.
Sierra Vista stepped out into the lead early with a run in the first inning before the Bulldogs got on the board. It wasn’t until the third inning, that Jared Jensen crossed homeplate on a ground out by Stratton Waite to tie the score.

In the very next play, Felix singled on a fly ball to bring home Wakefield and take the lead for the first time in the game.
But the Mountain Lions weren’t finished yet. They put up three more runs in the fourth inning to regain the lead and keep things interesting.
The Bulldogs scored another run in the fifth inning on a triple hit by Felix.
But they really put the game to bed in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on hits from Wakefield, Waite, Montoya, C. Jensen and Dodger Smith.
Bulldog batters got 14 hits in the game led by Felix and Waite who got 3 apiece.

Hughes got the win for the Dawgs pitching 3 innings. He allowing only two hits and struck out 3.
The Bulldogs hit the road again this week. They take on Western on Wednesday, Liberty on Thursday and Cheyenne on Saturday.

MVHS SOFTBALL

The Moapa Valley High School softball team split a pair of road games played last week. On Monday, April 17, the Pirates travelled to Clark High School in Las Vegas and lost to the Chargers, 0-6. Later in the week the Pirates travelled again to face Canyon Springs and slaughtered the Pioneers, 17-2.
Only three Pirate batters got hits in the game. But none of them got any points on the board. Andie Wood chalked up two hits while Kyndall Longman and Kenzie Hughes got one hit apiece. A total of 14 Pirate batters were struck out by the Clark pitcher.

The game at Canyon Springs was a different matter altogether. The Pirates got 10 hits and a total of 12 RBI in the game. Wood led off with 3 hits and 4 RBI, scoring 2 runs. Emma Gollahan got 2 hits and 4 RBI.
Kylie Neil went the distance in the pitcher’s circle for the Pirates allowing only one hit and striking out five batters.

By the end of last week, the Pirates had a record of 8-6 overall, 4-3 in league play. With the loss to Clark, they fall to a 3rd place standing in the league.

The Moapa team will travel to Sunrise Mountain on Wednesday, April 26. Their next home game will be on Monday, May 5 in a rematch against Clark. Game time is 3:30 pm.
