The Virgin Valley High School Bulldogs kept their hopes alive on Monday afternoon, May 8, rallying from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Sports Leadership Management Academy (SLAM) 6-3 and advance to the 3A Southern Division semifinals.
The Bulls scored in the first inning on a single and error against starting pitcher Jared Jensen to take a 1-0 lead. Lorenzo Anguiano had a big single for the Bulls.
The Bulls continued to find Jensen, putting up two hits to add another run and increasing their lead to 2-0.
The Bulldogs would cut into the Bulls lead in the bottom of the second on a single by Mason Montoya and two wild pitches making the score 2-1 after three complete innings.
The Bulls got the run back in the top of the fourth on singles by C. Tababgoura and Anguiano making the score 3-1.
The Dawgs brought in reliever Stratton Waite in hopes of shutting down the Bulls.
The Bulldogs were finally able to get to Bulls pitcher Audric Gregorio in the fifth inning scoring two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Jensen had a big hit for an R.B.I. single.
Waite continued to baffle the Bulls hitters keeping the score 3-3 until the Dawgs blew it open in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring three runs against Bulls reliever M.Masias to take a 6-3 advantage going into the seventh inning.
Singles by Drew Wakefield, Bryce Intagliata, Kurt Felix and Montoya led to the runs.
The Bulls threatened in the seventh but winning pitcher Waite shut the Bulls down.
The Bulldogs move on to face Boulder City, top seed on Tuesday, at the Eagles field at 4pm.
