Pirates End Regular Season On Top of Desert Division

The Moapa Valley High School baseball team played three games last week and won all three to remain as the #1 seed going into the regional playoffs this week. With the wins, Moapa Valley won its 20th game of the season and are 20-6 overall as they start the postseason.

The Pirates started the week on Monday, May 1 with a shutout of Sunrise Mountain in Las Vegas, 15-0. The Pirates opened the game scoring 2 runs then blowing the game wide open with 5 runs in the second. A 7 run fourth inning and a single run fifth inning ended the game by the mercy rule.
Shandon Matheson was 2-2 from the plate scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. He had a double.

Tyson Staheli scored twice. Aidan Johnson, Garrett Hadley and Dane Overson all hit doubles. Dalton Marshall and Trenton Wadsworth drove in 2 runs

Logan Schouten was the winning pitcher throwing two innings before giving way to Lucas Pettingil who struck out nine. Together they face 21 batters and gave up only 2 hits in the game.

The second game was on Thursday at home against Cheyenne. The Pirates beat the Desert Shields 9-3.
Moapa Valley scored 2 in the first, one in the second and a couple more in the third for a 5-0 lead. Cheyenne cut the lead to two runs in the fourth with 3 runs.
Cheyenne had just two hits in the game while the Pirates came away with 10.

On Saturday, the Pirates traveled to Clark High School in Las Vegas where Pettingill led the offense going 4-4 from the plate. Pettingill hit 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs.

Clark took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Moapa Valley tied the game in the fifth then took a 3 run lead.

With the win, the Pirates hosted the first round game of the regional tournament on Monday against the Western Warriors. Results of this game didn’t make the print deadline for this issue but will be reported at www.mvprogress.com.

The Pirates will host a game, win or lose, on Tuesday as well, in the double elimination Regional Tournament.
