The Progress
The Virgin Valley High School baseball team kept their 3A Southern Division Playoffs alive with a 13-3 win over the Western High School Warriors on Wednesday afternoon, May 10, in the Dawg Pound. It was the team’s third win over the Warriors in 2023.
The win sets up a rubber match between archrivals Moapa Valley and the Dawgs. The Pirates defeated SLAM Academy 4-3 at Moapa to advance to the matchup with the Dawgs which will be played at Boulder City on Thursday at 1pm. The winner of that game will have to go back to back against the Eagles at 4pm.
The winner of the Eagles/Bulldogs or Pirates will then advance to the championship game against Pahrump Valley on Friday at 1pm at a yet undisclosed field. Both the winners and losers of that match will qualify for the 3A State Championship beginning May 18 at Virgin Valley.
The Bulldogs advanced easily against the Warriors with a good offensive display putting up 13 hits in the win. The Dawgs scored 3 runs in the second inning adding 7 more runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead into the fourth inning.
The Warriors threatened in the fourth with 3 runs on the scoreboard cutting the Dawgs advantage to 10-3.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth before the game was called.
Martin Jordan got the win with Matt Hughes in relief.
Mason Montoya, Jared Jensen and Dodge Smith led the Dawgs with 2 hits each.
