The sounds of running feet and children playing issued from the Mesquite Rec Center last week as the Summer Dodge Ball program, hosted by the Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Services got underway. The action was intense as the kids scrambled around the large room doing battle with a multitude of soft rubber balls.

The program is one of many that are available during the summer break when kids have too much energy for their own good. In those time, dodge ball has been a favorite activity for many. Rec Center staffers say that physical activity like dodge ball is a perfect way for kids to get out all their excess energy while also having fun and socializing together.

The Rec Center hosts a myriad of fun summer activities for the whole family. Among these, the Summer Kid’s Dodgeball program has been a hit with various kids.

The sessions are open to the public. They take place in one-hour blocks for various age groups on Monday and Wednesday evenings. For ages 7-8 the start time is 5:15 pm. The 9-10 age group starts at 6:15 pm. For ages 11-12, play commences at 7:15 pm.

A season package deal is available for the entire program at $35 pe kid. This allows kids to come and play throughout the entirety of the summer program. But there is also the option of just a one-time drop in for $6 per session.

“The kids really love their time here!” said Tristin Murguía, who works at the Rec Center and was overseeing the dodgeball games last week. “They actually get really sad when they have to leave.”

The program, which started on May 30, runs for a total of six weeks. Mesquite parents can still bring in their children to enjoy these games.

Games range from classic dodgeball, doctor dodgeball, and various other variations of dodgeball.
Each session runs for 45 minutes overall with 5 minute game intervals.

An outing like this can be just what a kid may need during these weeks when school is out and energy is up. Dodgeball is just one of the various programs and recreational activities that the Mesquite Rec Center offers.
