The Progress
The Moapa Valley boys volleyball team is practicing hard to be a well-oiled machine in time for the 2024 season.
Head coach Tiffany Frederick and assistant coach Brooke Williams held tryouts last week. And the team dynamic has undergone a change since last year when the Pirates made it all the way to the state semi-final round..
“We have only three returning varsity players, since eight of them graduated!” said Frederick. “But we are excited about the growth that has developed with the open gyms and volleyball camps, with last year’s JV players.”
Frederick sees potential for the young team. “We have some powerful hitters,” she said. “But we have to get our serves and passing dialed in if we want to give Boulder City a run for their money.”
Brigham Whitmore, Jimmy Ward and Mateo Bradshaw are returning this year. They will bring leadership as well as experience with them.
And co-captains Kael Freeman and Jimmy Ward will help bring the team spirit.
In total there are twelve players on the varsity team who are eager to get the ball rolling this year. They all bring something great to the table to make the Pirates a force to be reckoned with.
Frederick talked about the lofty goals of this year’s team. “Our goal is to be consistent in our passing and serving,” she said..
The Pirates’ opening game will take place at home on Wednesday, March 6 against Cadence starting at 6 pm. Then on Friday, March 8, the Pirates travel to Valley High School in Las Vegas.
