Pirates go 3-1 in tournament play in Mesquite

The Moapa Valley High School baseball team has started strong with a 4-1 record to end the first full week of season play.

The Pirates travelled to Mesquite last week to compete in the Cactus Classic tournament. They came away with a 3-1 tournament record.
The Pirates started the tournament against Ogden, Utah and chalked up a 9-2 win.

The Moapa boys jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning. They scored 5 in the bottom of the 4th.
Tyson Pettingill had 2 RBI’s to lead the Pirates.
Dane Overson got the win allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.

In the second game of the tournament, the Pirates played San Juan, Utah and came away with a 10-4 win.
The Pirates started with 2 runs in the first inning then added 3 in the 3rd. San Juan scored their first in the bottom of the 3rd.
Overson and Tahj Totten each had 2 RBI’s.
Lucas Pettingill was the winning pitcher as he allowed 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

The Pirates saw their first loss in the third game, 3-2, against Mountain View of Orem, Utah.
Moapa Valley was first to get on the board after Totten doubled in the third inning, scoring one run.
The Bruins scored two runs in the next inning, then another at the top of the seventh.

Schouten managed to score on a wild pitch in the final moments of the game to make the final score.
Totten went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Pirates. Logan Schouten and Trenton Wadsworth got one hit apiece.
Garrett Hadley got the loss allowing four hits but striking out 13.

In their final game of the week the Pirates beat Ogden for a second time. This time the score was 19-5.
The Pirates scored 19 runs in the first inning.
The game lasted just two and a half innings on the mercy rule.

The Pirates have this week off due to spring break. But they will be back in action on Monday, Mar. 18 to play Chaparral in Las Vegas.

The Pirates will then play SLAM at home on Wednesday, Mar. 20; then host Eldorado the next day. Both games start at 3:30 pm.
