Pirates compete in spring break tournament

The Moapa Valley High School softball team traveled to St George last week during Spring Break, where they played five games in two days at the Dixie Sunshine Classic tournament. The Pirates finished the week 1-4 in tough competition from Utah.

On Friday, the team went up against the Milford Tigers and won the game, 10-9.
Kyndal Longman got two hits and 3 RBI in the game.
Kylie Neal pitched the win striking out 4 but giving up 8 hits and 9 runs.
This would be the Pirates’ only victory of the tournament.

In the second game the Pirates were shut out by the Skyview Bobcats, 14-0. Andie Woods got the only hit of the game for the Pirates.
Meanwhile, Skyview scored 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth for the mercy rule win.

In their third game of the day on Friday the Pirates went up against the Dixie Flyers. The game ended in an 8-1 Flyer win. Raegan Stankoski and Kyndal Longman each got a hit in the game. Longman’s hit was a homerun for the team’s only score.

That gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead, which they held until the top of the fourth when Dixie scored 6 runs to take a commanding lead. Dixie added 2 more runs on the fifth for the final score.
Dixie had five hits in the game.

On Saturday, the Pirates played Beaver and were beaten 8-2.
Beaver had a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Moapa Valley scored their first run
The Beavers added 2 more runs in the fifth, then 4 in the sixth for the final score. Beaver had 2 doubles and 2 triples in the game.

Longman went 2 for 2 at the plate to lead the Pirates in hits. Wood an Neal each drove in one run.
In the Pirates’ final game of the tournament, they played the Altamont Longhorns and were beaten 10-4.
Longman led the team with a homerun and a double, driving in 3 runs.
Moapa Valley scored twice in the top of the first.

The Longhorns then scored one in the first and second innings, then 4 in both the third and fourth.
The Pirates are now 3-5 over all.

The team hosted Canyon Springs on Monday. They travel to play Boulder City on Wednesday. Then they will participate in a weekend tournament at Virgin Valley. They will start off against White Pine on Thursday at noon.
