MVHS boys volleyball sweeps the week, 3-0

By LAURA ROBISON

The Progress

The Moapa Valley High School boys volleyball team played 3 games last week and won all three, all in straight sets, for a perfect week.

Game one was on Monday, March 18, in a home matchup with Founders Classical Academy.
With a lead of 8-7 in the first set, Caden Rawson stepped up to serve for 3, with a kill by Kayden Dixon.

Later, Dixon got the serve with an ace, and then a kill by Treston Holmstead. Holmstead went on to serve for three, including two aces, bringing the Pirates to an 18-14 lead.
Brigham Whitmore finally served for the set pointending with a win of 25-19.

In sets two and three the Pirates took down the Centurions 25-21 and 25-20.
“While we won all 3 games, they were not pretty,” said head coach Tiffany Frederick of the match. “Coming off spring break and not being in the gym for 5 days, didn’t help.”

On Wednesday, the Pirates travelled to Cristo Rey St. Viator. and volleyed for 25-10, 25-17 and 25-13 wins.

The first set started out slow. But eventually, the players started communicating and playing with confidence.
Whitmore caught fire and had 15 kills out of 18 attempts. Mateo Bradshaw had 9 kills and Caden Rawson had 8.

There was also great passing and digs from the Jimmy Ward on defense. “The boys played as a team and the energy was super high!” Frederick said. “A complete 360 from Monday night’s game.”

Back at home on Friday, the Pirates hosted Mater Academy East and promptly dispatched the Knights, walking away with set scores of 25-13, 25-7, 25-13.

MVHS got in the game late again with Kayden Dixon stepping up to serve for 6 points, bringing the Pirates to an 8-4 lead.

At 11-7, Rawson served for 5 points, including an ace, and kills from Dixon and Whitmore. Aiden Leavitt served the winning point.

The star of set two was David Walker, who served for 12 points, with 3 aces and several Pirate kills.

Set 3 began with Ward serving for 8 points. It was no contest after that.

MVHS has a record of 4-1. The big rivalry matchup against Virgin Valley will be held on Wednesday, March 27 in Mesquite starting at 6 p.m.

“It’s hard coaching in the Spring when you are competing with spring break, the Fair, band trips, concerts, and end of the year stuff,” Frederick said. “It’s challenging to balance all that without it affecting the team.”
