Pirate baseball goes 3-4 on a busy week

The Moapa Valley High School baseball team was busy last week with seven games played.

The Pirates delivered double digit wins in the first three games: Chaparral 13-0, SLAM 17-1 and Eldorado 12-2. Then, they traveled to St George where they lost four games: Salem Hills 7-2, Lone Peak 14-1, Skyridge 16-3 and Woods Cross 11-4. All of these were to much bigger schools.

On Monday, Mar. 18 against Chaparral, the Pirates scored 3 runs in the first inning then added 7 in the second building a 10 run lead early.
Tyson Pettingill drove in 3 RBIs in the win to lead the Pirates in the five inning game.

The Pirates used five pitchers with Logan Schouten the starter getting the win. The combination only allowed one Cowboy hit for the game.

On Wednesday against SLAM the Pirates wrapped up the game in three innings due to the mercy rule 17-1.

Moapa scored 13 runs in the bottom of the third to end the game. Shandon Matheson led the team with 3 RBI’s on two hits including a double.
Tahj Totten pitched to just 12 batters in this game allowing two hits in the win.

On Thursday, the Pirates hosted Eldorado and built a 5-1 lead after the third inning. The Sun Devils added a run in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead back. But Moapa Valley ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with 7 runs scored.
Dane Overson drove in 5 RBI with 3 hits in the game.
Trenton Wadsworth pitched all six innings for the win.

In St. George on Friday, the Pirates opened against Salem Hills, a school from Salem, Utah just south of Provo.

Each team scored a run in the second inning where it would stay until the top of the fifth when Salem would score 3. Salem added 3 more in the sixth and held on for the win.
Totten had three hits in the game driving in the RBI for the Pirates.
Lucus Pettingill got the loss allowing 5 earned runs.

Later in the day, Lone Peak scored in all five innings in a 14-1 defeat of the Pirates.
Moapa Valley scored their one run in the bottom of the first. Garret Hadley a homerun in the first to put the Pirates on the board.

On Saturday, Skyridge dominated the Pirates opening with 6 runs in the first inning alone and ending with a 16-3 win.
Overson had 2 RBI in the game while Schouten got the loss allowing 8 earned runs.

Later on Saturday against Woods Cross, the Pirates tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the first, then scored one run in the second inning for a brief lead. But Woods Cross tied the game in the third and added 2 in the fourth and 6 in the fifth for the win.
Evan Jones got the loss with 5 earned runs allowed.

The Pirates are 7-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
They will travel to Boulder City on Wednesday and then to Pahrump on Thursday.
