Spring Sports Roundup (March 27, 2024)

VVHS Track and Field
The Virgin Valley High School Track and Field teams travelled to Mojave High School in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Mar. 20 to participate in a weekday meet involving three teams.

The girls team took a distant 2nd place with 30 points, compared to first place Legacy who chalked up 74 points at the meet.
The boys team came in third with 25 points; behind first place Mojave with 67 points and Legacy at 40 points.

The Bulldogs had Dylan Barnum take 2nd place in the 1600 meter at 5:07.63.
Jeremy Gosset took home a second place finish in the shotput for the Bulldogs with a throw of 43’ 1.5.
VVHS senior Dylan Vellinga won the pole vault event at 10’ 0. Kyle Dalton took 2nd place with a 9’6 vault. Ethan Ofori tied for 3rd at 9’ 0.

Ofori also took 2nd place in the triple jump with a leap of 38’9.

On the girls side, Ari Easton took fifth place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.63. The junior also took 4th in the 200 meters at 28.24; and 4th in the 400 meters at 1:05.78.
VVHS senior Jenna Walters won the 1600 meters with a time of 5:33.57. She also won the 3200 meter race for the Bulldogs at 12:41.20.

VVHS junior Audrey Fiso threw the shot put 34’4 for a first place finish. She also won the discus event at 85’8.
Wynn Kelly, a sophomore, tied for first in the high jump at 4’ 2. Kelly also took 2nd place in Long Jump with 12’ 3.5.

The VVHS track teams will compete at Sunrise Mountain this week on Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 27.

MVHS Track and Field

The Pirate track and field teams traveled to Arbor View on Tuesday, Mar. 19 and placed third in both the boys and girls behind Centennial and Arbor View.

Degan Jones placed second in the 100 meters and fourth in the 400 meters.
James Nunez took second in the 1600 meters with William Anderson taking 4th and Grant Conger in 5th.

Brody Redd placed second for the Pirates in the 110 hurdles then fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.
Redd also placed second in both the long and the triple jump.
Logan Stewart won both the shot put and Discus. Gavin Frederick placed second in both events.
Caleb Anderson placed second in the pole vault.

On the girls team, Haley Western won the shot put event, then placed fourth in the long jump.
Claire Cox won the high jump and placed second in the discus.
Amber Bodily was second in the pole vault.

Alison Mills won the 100 meter hurdles, then placed third in both the high jump and the 300 meter hurdles,
Bailey Patten took fourth in the high jump.
Janet Werner was third in the discus and second in the shot put.
Sienna Neilson placed fourth in the shot put.
Jax Montgomery was fourth in the discus.

VVHS Softball
The Bulldogs mowed down two opponents in games played early last week.
On Monday, Mar. 18 the Dawgs hosted Pahrump Valley in a 21-9 slaughter of the Trojans.
The Bulldogs put up 6 runs in the 2nd inning and then never looked back.

Everyone in the lineup contributed to the Bulldog’s 24 hits in the game. Both Mercades Jordan and Natalie Plancarte led the team with 4 hits and 3 RBI apiece in the game. Blythe Mosher and Ashley Angeiano each batted in 3 as well.

Julia Leavitt pitched the win for the Bulldogs allowing 6 hits and striking out 9.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs travelled to Canyon Springs and shut out the Pioneers 23-0 in a 3-inning no-hitter pitched by Riley Frei.
Leavitt hit an inside the park home run in the first inning, scoring three runs. The Bulldogs stacked up 11 unanswered runs in the top of the first.
Leavitt ended up with 4 RBI in the game.

Plancarte got 2 hits and 2 RBI. Frei also got 2 hits. Anna Tausinga batted in 2 on one hit.
The Bulldogs will host Cheyenne on Wednesday starting at 3:30. Then they travel to Western on Thursday.

MVHS Softball
The Pirates hosted Canyon Spring on Monday, Mar. 18 and beat the Pioneers, 19-0.
The team tallied 10 runs in the first and 9 in the second. The game ended in the third do to the mercy rule.
MVHS senior Kyndal Longman led the team with 3 RBI.

The second game of the week for the Pirates was on the road and ended in loss against Boulder City 11-1.

The Pirates could only get three hits in the game as Boulder City pitcher Peyton Rogers struck out 5.
Kylie Neal got the loss for the Pirates allowing 6 earned runs giving up two home runs.
Emmy Cornwall hit a single in the top of the 4th batting in Andie Wood for the Pirates’ only run of the game.

The team will host Valley on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm and then host Del Sol on Wednesday at 3:30 pm. Then they travel to Cheyenne on Thursday.
