Spring Sports Roundup (April 10, 2024)

MVHS Softball

The Pirates softball team started last week with victories against Mater East and Democracy Prep.
The first game was at home on Monday, April 1, where the Pirates won 9-1 over the Knights of Mater East.

The Pirates took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and added three more runs in the second inning, two more in the fourth and a single run in the fifth for the win. Mater scored their only run in the seventh.

The Knights finished with one hit against Andie Wood who pitched the entire game striking out 15 and walking just two.
Wood also led the team in hitting with three hits and two runs batted in.
Kyndal Longman had a hit on two at bats, one being a double. She drove in two runs as well.
Raegan Stankoski had three hits in the game scoring two runs.

On Thursday, the Pirates went three innings as they destroyed Democracy Prep 20-0 in Las Vegas.
Moapa scored 11 runs in the first then 9 more in the second.
Andie Wood slashed a home run and drove in 4 runs total.
Longman had a double and a single driving in 3 runs.
Stankoski scored twice and had a couple of hits in the game.

Kylie Neil earned the win allowing just one hit in the game while striking out nine of the 10 that came to the plate.

MVHS Baseball

The Pirates won two of their three scheduled games this week by forfeit. They were set to play Mojave in a home and away series. But Mojave has no baseball team.

On Friday, April 5, the Pirates traveled to Hurricane Utah and were beaten by the Tigers, 5-1.
The Pirates had six hits in the game with Tyson Pettingill driving in the only run in the fifth inning.
The Tigers took a 2-run lead in the first then scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

The Pirates are 9-9 overall and 3-1 in league play.

The team hosted Virgin Valley on Monday with the results not making it in time for The Progress press deadline this week. The team then travels to Virgin Valley on Wednesday for the second of two game series.

VVHS Softball

The Bulldogs skated through two victories last week beating Democracy Prep 17-1 at home on Monday, April 1; and then destroying Del Sol on Thursday 23-2 in Las Vegas.
Against Democracy Prep, the Bulldogs tallied 10 runs in the first inning alone.

Reggi Frei led the Bulldogs with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Natalie Plancarte matched Frei with 3 hits, driving in 1 run. Julia Leavitt and Davie Slack got 2 runs apiece.
Mercades Jordan bashed in two runs in the bottom of the third on a home run to left field.
Julia Leavitt got the win for the Bulldogs with zero hits and one run (zero earned), striking out six and walking two.

In the three-inning slaughter of Del Sol, the Bulldogs chalked up 13 runs in the first, another 6 in the second and 4 in the third.

Julia Leavitt got four hits, two of them home runs, driving in 6 runs for the Bulldogs. Hayden Owsley also notched four hits with 1 home run and 2 RBI.

Frei earned the win allowing one hit and one run but striking out four and walking one.

VVHS Track & Field

The Virgin Valley High School track and field teams handily won a weekday meet hosted in Mesquite on Tuesday, April 2. Two other schools attended the meet from Las Vegas including Cheyenne and Chaparral.

The Bulldog boys’ team cleared the board at the meet, winning with 92 points against 2nd place Cheyenne which had 52.5 points.

The Bulldogs had the top two finishes in the 400 meter race with Joaquin Ramirez winning at 54.7 and Dylan Vellinga close behind at 56.3.
Timen Van Der Zee won the 800 meters for the Bulldogs at 2:23.2. Teammates Keyan Abbott and Jesus Sandoval were the next two to cross the finish line.

Dylan Barnum won the 1600 meters for the Dawgs at 5:03.6. Virgin Valley runners Tyzin Broderick and Jayston Malcom took 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Bulldog distance runner Gavin Hughes won the 3200 meters at 11:22.1. He was followed by Tyzin Broderick in 2nd and Jayston Malcom in 3rd for VVHS.
Vellinga won the 110 meter hurdles in 20.2. He also took first in the pole vault at 10’6.

Jeremy Gosset took first in shot put with a throw of 40.3. Wesley Walker threw the javelin 94’ for a second place finish.
Mark Davis won the long jump event for the Bulldogs at 17’ 0.5. Davis also took 2nd in the triple jump at 37’ 6. Vellinga took third at 37’2.

The girls team won their side of the meet with a score of 61, just ahead of Cheyenne which took second at 56.5.

Ari Easton placed in the top three for the Dawgs in all three sprinting events taking 2nd in the 100 meters (13.1),; 3rd in 200 meters (28.5); and 3rd in 400 meters (1:04.6).
VVHS sophomore Kelsey Ellis took 2nd in the 800 meters at 3:04.2.

Jenna Walters dominated the 1600 meter with a time of 5:39.8; nearly 2 full minutes ahead of the nearest competitor.

Bulldogs took the top two spots in the 100 meter hurdles with Celeste Guzman taking 1st at 19.8, and Anni Tobler 2nd at 20.0. Tobler also won the 300 meter hurdles at 55.0.

Audrey Fiso threw the shotput nearly eight feet further than the nearest opponent with a throw of 36’ 8.5 for first place. Fiso also dominated the discus at 94’ 6 tossing it 24 feet beyond anyone else at the meet.

Wynn Kelly won both the high jump and the triple jump for the Bulldogs. She also took second in the long jump event.
VVHS sophomore Kelsey Ellis took first in the pole vault.
