Pirates win two games vs Mater East

The Moapa Valley High School baseball team played a two-game series against Mater East last week. The Pirates won both of them, 15-5 and 10-1, improving the overall record to 11-11 and their league record to 5-3. The Pirates sit in second place to Virgin Valley in the Desert League.

On Wednesday, April 17, the Pirates hosted the Knights in the first game of the series.
Lucas Pettingill hit two doubles to drive in 4 runs. The first in the third inning and the second in the fourth.

Mater took an early lead in the top of the third inning driving in three runs on two singles for a 3-0 lead. But Moapa Valley tied the game in the bottom half of the third when Dane Overson doubled, scoring a run.

Mater regained the lead in the fourth with a double that scored two runs for a 5-3 lead.

The Pirates took the lead for good in the fourth by scoring seven runs in the inning. The big hit came from a Pettingill double, driving in two runs.

Moapa Valley scored one run on a fielder’s choice, then Overson doubled, scoring two runs.
Overson was 3-4 in the game.

Garrett Hadley singled and scored another run. The five run fifth inning gave the Pirates a ten run lead and win at home.

Pettingill was the winning pitcher giving up eight hits and five runs striking out just two and walking two.
The Pirates had ten hits in the game.
The second game was played on Friday in Las Vegas.
Hadley gave the Pirates their first run in the top of the first with a single.

The second inning broke the game open. Hadley hit a sacrifice fly driving in a run. Pettingill doubled again scoring two and Derick Nava Gallegos doubled scoring two. Moapa Valley scored on a fielder’s choice for the sixth run of the inning and a 7-0 lead.

Moapa Valley added another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth for a 10-0 lead.
Mater East forced the game into a seventh inning with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Hadley got the win allowing five hits. The Pirates had six hits in the game.

Moapa Valley plays a home and away series against Canyon Springs this week. They hosted the first game on Monday. Then on Wednesday they travel to North Las Vegas.
