VV volleyball bags Canyon Springs, 3-1

By BOB SNELL

The Progress

With their playoff seeding secured, the Bulldogs wrapped up regular season play by defeating an athletic Canyon Springs squad, 3-1, on Wednesday night, May 1, inside the VVHS gymnasium.
The Bulldogs got by the visitors from North Las Vegas by scores of 25-17, 18-25, 25-13 and 25-19 on Senior Night to improve to 21-11 overall.

“Canyon Springs is very athletic,” VVHS head coach Kortney Tobler said. “This match gives us an idea of what to look forward to in the playoffs this week. I thought it was a good showing by us.”
McKay Mulitalo led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 digs, 11 kills, two service aces and two blocked shots. Destry Tobler added 11 kills and five digs.

Nate Panjaitan, one of two seniors honored before the match, had 25 assists to go along with eight digs. Aiden Muniz contributed eight digs while Andrew Muniz, the other senior honored, had five digs.

“We used this match to get our kids ready for the playoffs,” Tobler said. “I thought we had some kids step up and play well.”

Virgin Valley, which finished 13-1 in league play, will now turn its sights to the upcoming 3A State tournament.

By virtue of being the top seed from the Desert League, the Bulldogs will host a state quarterfinal match Tuesday at 6 pm against Western of Las Vegas.

“We don’t know what to expect from Western,” Tobler said. “They are kind of a wild card. I know they’re a scrappy team and we’ll have to come in focused and play well.”

If the Bulldogs prevail, they would host a state semifinal contest Thursday at 6 pm against the winner of Tuesday’s Moapa Valley/Coral Academy of Las Vegas match.

The state championship match is scheduled to be held May 14 at 3 p.m. at Sunrise Mountain High School in Las Vegas.
“I feel good with where we are,” Tobler said. “We’re playing at the level we want to be at. The boys are playing great. I think we’re ready.”
